New Prints & Show Announcement

Reia's 3 Sheep Print

3 Sheep Print Set

Zebra Swallowtail Print

3 Butterflies Print Set
It's nearly December and that means more prints and print sets have migrated to my shop all those in search of the perfect Christmas gift.  Is there even such a thing as a perfect Christmas gift?  That's always a struggle for me every year- to find that special something for each person on my list.  It's so easy to find things that match my own taste...but what about parent's taste?  my in-law's?  my sister's?  Is it as challenging for you as it is for me?

Well, December 1 marks my last and final show of the year.  Can you believe it?  It'll be a nice small gathering in a building just blocks from home.  I'm partnering with two other artists- one a stained glass maker and the second, a jeweler- for this one time event this Saturday from 10-4pm.  In case you happen to live nearby, the address is 108 West Springtown Road in Minier, IL.  And in case you don't live nearby, no worries!  My shop will remain open for browsing and buying all weekend.  I do hope you find something special for everyone on your list this Christmas.

Pictures that Tell a Story

Hello friends!  Are you enjoying your week so far?  I am starting to feel that holiday excitement too.  This holiday season for me will be one like never before.  It's my first "self-employed" Christmas season and the custom orders are already streaming in so quickly that I fear I won't be able to keep up.  It's a wonderful dilemma and one I thank God for everyday, but it is, as you can imagine, quite overwhelming at times.  My "to do" list is growing at such a fast rate!

One of the things on my "to do before the holiday rush" list is to update the product photography in my shop.  It's been a long time coming with many hours of behind the scenes work and brainstorming to come up with such a simple concept to show off my prints.  The cardinal rule in selling work online is photography.  How well does your customer understand your product?  Can they visualize the size, color, texture, weight, etc?  And since I'm in the market for visual story-telling, photographing my work is crucial in conveying each story my paintings tell.

So, as simple as these new product photos seem, I'm so proud to have them in the shop as I strive to have the prettiest, clearest, and most efficient shop possible.  I'll be adding new print sets and paintings all winter long, so be sure to check back often if you are in the market for some cute Christmas gifts.  (Click the images to get started.)

2 NEW wintery prints

Collecting Antlers
archival print 8x10"
$18.00

Cooper's Hawk
archival print 9x12"
$25.00
Over the course of the next few weeks my Etsy shop will be undergoing a major remodel in which new items like these two wintery prints will be listed and product photos will be updated.  I've already changed the section titles and reduced many prices on my prints to make it easier for all you organized folks who have already started Christmas shopping!

These two prints are a couple of my favorites, and I've decided to release them together in the shop.  Collecting Antlers and the Cooper's Hawk have this rich Prussian Blue I use so often to evoke a cool wintery feeling perfect for this time of year.  With the earth so cold and bare with forgotten leaves and life, my inclination is to curl up inside with the candles burning and huddle with my space heater over my drawing board long into the night.  But there is still another side of me eager to explore the leaf-less woods in search of things like creamy white antlers and fluffy winter birds.

As you drive to see your families this holiday season, scan your eyes to the treetops and count the number of Cooper and Red Tail Hawks you find along the roadside.  They are easy to spot this time of year and cute as ever with their fuzzy faces and thick coat of feathers.

A wonderful weekend...

I'd love to tell you every detail from my weekend because it was truly wonderful, but I simply can't fit it all in.  So...let me think of the very best things to share...

First, how about I show you Galena, Illinois?  Have you ever been?

I went for an annual art festival, but I'll share that part with you later.
Now tell me how adorable this Italian restaurant on the hill is!
Corrie and I sat at that corner table there and overlooked this...

...lovers, an accordian player on the sidewalk, and a horse-drawn carriage giving rides.
We were in Italy for a night (or at least we pretended we were).
How about those lovers, eh?

The downtown streets are lined with back-to-back buildings housing gift shops, art galleries, ice cream parlors, and yes, even hot sauce stores...very eclectic and oh so charming with all the hills and brick and colorful awnings.
If we did nothing else but walk around and talk and eat ice cream, it would have been enough.

But what made it so especially excellent was the combination of relaxation and work.
Here's what I mean...

Hours upon hours of precious time I spent preparing for this season of art shows.

Getting things framed...

and mounted...

varnished...

and packaged...

and more framed!  This last picture shows the original painting next to the framed print.  How gorgeous is the Green Birdwing Butterfly?!

All that work for this...

And it was all just so sunny and perfect until I spotted those angry clouds.
Corrie and I took cover, zipped up the sides, and (literally) held the fort down until the storm passed.
Good thing my walls can move with the wind without causing me much worry (thank the heavens for zip-ties!).

The next day was much more pleasant...

The vintage suitcases add a nice touch and are extremely portable as they can be snapped shut in one hot second to protect the prints from rain or to haul them to/from the car.

But here was the best part of it all: getting to talk with the people who stopped by my booth!
I get more out of that than anything else.  It's so inspiring and incredibly important to hear how others perceive my work.  Like, for example, the mother who came looking for paintings for her young violin-playing son.  She said she loved the sheet music I tend to add in my paintings, but wanted to see more paintings for boys.  (And I'll give you one guess what I'll be painting next!)

Another pair came in looking for a gift for their new grand-baby...

and walked away with a very nice arrangement (if I say so myself).
How adorable would a trio of paintings look above a baby's bed?
Oh, it's such an honor to be able to provide that.

It just excites me even more for my next shows!
I'm equally as excited to show you some paintings I have in the works right now but aren't quite finished with...like the boy with the pet owl who lives in a castle on a hill, or the girl who can communicate with hawks, or the twin boys riding giraffes bare-back.

And what about the world's largest butterfly I've been dying to paint?

ok, I'll stop.

Don't judge me for that corny picture.

Can I just share one more thing?

The vineyard!

(and a wedding we definately weren't invited to)

A local told us about this great and scenic vineyard a few short miles outside Galena.
You better believe we didn't pass it up!

The drive was GORGEOUS, filled with all our favorite things...red barns, lush woods, galloping fawns, sheep grazing on hillsides, old wooden fences outlining the hills, beautiful brick cottages, spotted cows knee deep in a creek bed, a setting sun, and a light fog above the treeline.

We stopped multiple times for pictures and to scream about how much we wish we lived in those cottages and could marry farmers...

ok so maybe I made up the bit about farmers.
I guess I was just dreaming of my lover boy.

Wonderful and exhausting all at once.
I hope your weekend was the same!

{ *Side note* I'll be posting THIS WEEK to let you know the exact time my new prints will be released into the shop.  I'm so excited!  Hope you are too.}
I can't wait!  Stay tuned...
