birds & bunnies

Last week I read this post about robins on Design*Sponge and now it's like I've been seeing them everywhere. Birds and bunnies in my front yard give me an excuse to test drive my new 75-300mm zoom lens (gifted to me by some very generous in-laws). I think that last bird is called an Eastern Towhee...and it's the first time I've seen one up close! So pretty.

As you well know birds are so inspiring for me. I think about what it must be like to sit at the very top of a tree and look down at the world, unencumbered. There are all these giant old trees in our neighborhood and when I go for walks beneath their singing canopies I just imagine all that's taking place above me: robins building nests and raising families, squirrels curling up inside burrowed holes, dark clouds scraping against the top branches, and year after year of leaves budding and blooming and falling. Trees really have their own stories don't they?

A new wintery painting...

I started this next painting on a bit of whim.  Now that I think about it, I've been collecting inspiration for months and just didn't realize it.  Like, for example, when I went mushroom hunting in the woods a few months ago and envied all the skinny trees and the mossy forest floor...

and when I went on a photoshoot with Honna and her three siblings and took pictures on top of the giant twisting roots...

I've been seeing these antlers everywhere on Etsy (and even purchased a pair from this shop)...

And these arctic foxes I've been secretly obsessing over- their fuzzy white coats and dark eyes are entrancing.  Oh!  And how about this ridiculously gorgeous and woodsy treehouse with the antler chandelier?

Ok so maybe all of these different images don't quite connect...what do antlers have to do with tree roots and arctic foxes?  Well, hopefully in the next few days, I can show you.

Now here's a few new original paintings I'd like to share...
Bear and His Friends 6x6 in Watercolor on paper

"They were an unlikely trio, the bear and his two raccoon sidekicks, but they simply wouldn't tolerate the nonsense of those who told them they should not be friends. And, despite the gossip, they continued to meet every day at the gray rock to plan their next big (and mostly dangerous) adventure."

The Storytelling Moose 6x6 in Watercolor on paper

"They gathered from far and wide to hear his tales of adventure and heroism,
for he was known to be the best story-teller in all the wooded land."

Now, I've got at least 5 more paintings in the works right now, so come back soon to see more.

Happy Thursday!

my love language...

imagine a place that always smells like hundreds of pine trees.
a place sheltered from the beating sun, the whirling wind, the sounds of civilization.
a place where you can feel completely alone
and yet not lonely, surrounded by the Lord and His beauty.
a place to rest and yet to feel more awake than you've felt all day.

ahhh.  this is nice.
welcome to my favorite place.

sometimes in the morning I get there before the fog clears.  oh how beautiful the trees look with the fog!
it's the prettiest gray you've ever seen.
and it always amazes me how quiet it is...well, quiet in the sense that you can't hear all the cars going 90 just on the other side of the trees.
all you can hear is the sound of the leaves clapping,
the birds yelling and fighting and singing, the squirrels running in the leaves.
and the most beautiful aroma...something you'd never be able to buy.

and here's the best part.  it's all free.  given as a gift.
from the Father of love.
